Do any of you remember the 1964 Anchorage, Alaska earthquake? It was the highest magnitude earthquake at 9.2 that Alaska had ever experienced. In 1964 earthquake monitoring and investigation was not done at the same level as it is today. This earthquake brought to the forefront the newly forming theory of plate tectonics. This realization changed our understanding of these great earthquakes.
When the plates slipped under each other, a portion of the land rose and a different portion of land sank killing the existing vegetable with salt water. This change in the landscape can still be seen.
